A lot of people would look at the title and decide If they don’t like wrestling then they won’t like this movie. Don’t be shy about checking this out. It will appeal to other than just wrestling fans. This is mainly a life story with some wrestling thrown in. Randy The Ram, (Mickey Rourke) is the main character and wrestler. He is getting older, his big wrestling days have passed, and it is the time of his life that he needs to move on. Wrestling has been everything to him for so long that he doesn’t know how to let go. There is nothing in the world like having the spotlight on you in the ring. Because this all consuming life is basically over, the lonely and dejected Randy is pushed on the road to rediscover himself..
Randy tries to bring the people around him in closer. The woman in his life (Marisa Tomei) is an aging stripper with similar issues. She needs to move on from this step in life where she has become stuck. They have an authentic looking struggle to come together and build a relationship. Randy’s estranged daughter is played by Evan Rachel Wood. They face an uphill battle to build the foundation of a father daughter relationship. This is a very emotional part of the film.
The film is a real life, fictional story, filled with all the drama of real life. Rourke plays The Ram so well, that he is not just acting, but truly seems to transform into the wrestler. It is amazing to watch.
Its not all emotional drama. It’s a wrestling movie, of course there are some fights in it! Randy ends up wrestling with his landlord, the guy who owns the trailer park. He also gets into it with the fellow that has the nearby food market. This activity keeps the movie going smoothly without going too far.
The Wrestler has it all! There’s the action of fighting, The drama of love and relationships, and the feel good of hope. The acting and directing are incredible. It is a must see for fans of either Action or Drama style movies. Whether you are into wrestling or not will not affect your enjoyment of this film. Everyone will find something they like about this movie.
